Playing with the CNE Band prior to the parade

Playing with the CNE Band prior to the parade

I am having a lot of fun (and getting a lot of exercise) playing with some of Toronto’s finest musicians in the Mardi Gras Band at the CNE again this year.  We perform daily, starting with a 10 minute performance just inside the Prince’s Gates followed by the parade. The parade steps off at 6pm, the pre-parade performance starts around 5:45 pm

Weston Silver Band Impressive at NABBA Championships

Embassy Theatre, Fort Wayne Indiana

The Embassy Theatre was home to the 2016 NABBA competition

I had the great pleasure of performing with the Weston Silver Band at the North American Brass Band Championships in Fort Wayne Indiana. The band placed 2nd in division one and was only a whisker away from winning the division title. Many thanks to Larry Shields, Theresa MacDonald and all of the band members who made me feel so welcome. It was a joy to perform with such fine musicians.

Brassackwards Christmas Concert

on Monday, December 14, 2015 at 8 p.m., Brassackwards will be performing our third annual Christmas Concert at The Smiling Buddha, 961 College Street in Toronto. It should be a great concert. Brassackwards is an eight piece brass group (four trumpets, three trombones and tuba) with some very talented musicians and great arrangements. It’s a great band to play tuba in with some very exciting charts. Please click here to go to our Facebook events page . I hope to see you there!

The Dixie Demons perform “Fidgety Feet” at Sticky Fingers in Barrie

I had a great time performing yesterday (April 13, 2014) with the Dixie Demons in Barrie at Sticky Fingers restaurant for the Simcoe County Jazz Society. The band was cooking as it always does. the video clip below was shot with my iPad sitting on a music stand which was unceremoniously moved by a customer during the recording as you will see. The band members are co leaders Ross Wooldridge on clarinet and Dan Douglas on trombone plus Steve Crowe on trumpet, Phil Disera on banjo, John Collin on drums and Doug Burrell (yours truly) on tuba.

An Introduction….

imageThanks for checking out my first foray into the world of blogging!

I am a music educator and tuba player working in the Toronto area. I am very fortunate to have had the chance to play various flavours of jazz tuba with a number of phenomenally talented musicians. Bands that I am currently playing with include the Dixie Demons, who play what I would call trad jazz with attitude,(Ross Wooldridge on clarinet, Steve Crowe on trumpet, Dan Douglas on trombone, Chris Lamont on drums) and the Brian Barlow Brass and Drums (2 trumpets, 2 trombones, tuba and percussion). Brian writes phenomenal charts and the musicians in the band (Russ Little on trombone, Chase Sanborn, Brian O’Kane on trumpet and Brian Barlow on percussion) are marvelous players.

I really enjoy playing with NOJO. The Neufeld Occipinti Jazz Orchestra is once again a 16 piece ensemble after a few years as a 9 piece band and it really cooks thanks to great players and the innovative charts provided by co-leaders Paul Neufeld and Michael Occipinti.

I round out my playing with various corporate events, private functions and by performing with several brass quintets which are active in the Toronto area.
